We call for a minimum wage of $15 per hour, indexed to the cost of living. (From the SPUSA Platform)

Michigan’s minimum wage sits at a paltry $8.50 per hour. This is not a livable income for the nearly 100,000 Michiganders living at or below Minimum wage. (  With poverty level wages like these many working people are also reliant on food assistance and other welfare programs.  This means that the tax payers of Michigan are subsidizing the wages that businesses should be paying.

We call for the United States to immediately and unconditionally withdraw its forces from Iraq and Afghanistan. (From the SPUSA Platform)

Over 200 Michiganders  have lost their lives for the senseless Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  So many young people, from our communities were sent overseas to invade, conquer, and occupy other lands for the benefit of the %1 of Americans that profit from war and teOver 200 Michiganders  have lost their lives for the senseless Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  So many young people, from our communities were rror.  An unknown amount of Iraqi and Afghani blood has been spilled in the cause of U.S. imperialism.  U.S. troops still occupy these lands as the causality count continues to rise.

You can read many of the U.S. soldiers names, ages, where they are from and how they died here:

We call for a federal ban on all forms of job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. (From the SPUSA Platform)

In Michigan it is legal to fire someone for their perceived gender, gender identity, or sexuality.  This is absurd and dangerous.  Trans/Homophobia codified into law is unacceptable and must be dismantled.

In this state it is also legal to deny service or housing to someone for their perceived gender, gender identity, or sexuality.

The struggle for LGBTQ liberation is a socialist struggle. The ruling class benefits from the division among workers based on homo/transphobia. This makes it harder for workers to organize their workplaces. It may force some LGBTQ workers to remain silent out of fear for their jobs, giving bosses yet another advantage over workers.

Discrimination causes LGBTQ people to lose or not get jobs that otherwise would have been theirs, putting LGTBQ people at a disadvantage to the rest of the work force. Bigotry, codified into law, must be eradicated and the capitalist system which relies on bigotry and division must be replaced.

We call for placing full financial responsibility on private companies for prevention and clean up of their own toxic wastes and for full compensation of workers and residents adversely affected by environmental hazards. (From the SPUSA Platform)

Michigan is home to 65 EPA Superfund sites and nearly 6,600 other toxic sites.  3 of these super-fund sites are right here in District 70: the Velsicol Burn Pit in St. Louis, Velsicol Chemical Corp site on the Pine River in St. Louis, and the Gratiot County Landfill also located in St Louis.

The Velsicol Burn Pit has costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars and this hasn’t even been enough.  The company and people responsible paid next to nothing to ensure they were not held responsible for this very preventable contamination into the Pine River and local area.    We must hold the criminals that run the companies responsible for their crimes against the environment and people which their decisions affect.

Here’s a link to a map of the Superfund sites here in Michigan.

The Socialist Party recognizes the intimate link between racism and capitalism and demands the elimination of all forms of discrimination in housing, jobs, education, health care, etc.  We are committed to the creation of a pluralistic society that defends and promotes a multicultural/multi-ethnic presence in both the public and private spheres. The Socialist Party rejects the social construction of race and we commit ourselves to the eradication of racism.  (From the SPUSA Platform)
